Sustainability at Lion People Communities Marketplace Environment Sponsorships & Donations

We see ourselves as a community with a connection to the communities in which we operate. That’s not just about having good times, it’s also about protecting people and encouraging communities to stay together.

A key component of our commitment to our consumers is ensuring that we do not engage in marketplace activity that could result in increased levels of misuse. In fact, the long-term sustainability of our business relies on the existence of a sustainable drinking culture, and there is an increasing body of opinion that suggests that our beverages, when enjoyed in moderation, can confer significant health benefits.

However, there is a minority of drinkers who choose to drink at risky levels to the potential detriment of their health. Alcohol misuse is a societal problem, created by social and cultural factors that will only be addressed by a long-term all-of-community change campaign. Beverage companies like Lion Nathan acknowledge that we need to play a key role in any community solution. We believe that reducing the harms caused by alcohol misuse is in everyone’s best interests – our consumers, our customers and ours.

The debate on misuse has been obscured for far too long by a misguided focus on issues like pricing, marketing and product availability – mechanisms that have no impact on the real, deep seated causes of misuse and place no onus on the obligation of individuals to take responsibility for their own drinking choices.

We have long maintained a significant focus on dealing with misuse directly and in partnership with government and community groups. Our efforts are focussed within a long-term strategic framework that enables us to play our part in making sustainable and effective contributions to addressing misuse.

Broadly speaking, we seek to make a difference in the following ways:

1. Misuse

  • The way we market our products – marketing responsibly and, where appropriate and effective, providing information on safe and responsible enjoyment of our products
  • Understanding misuse – funding independent research into the causes of, and solutions to, the problems of misuse
  • Achieving cultural change – achieving sustainable change in the negative aspects of Australia’s drinking culture – programmes, partnerships and initiatives to deal with the real causes of misuse among ‘at risk’ groups

2. Investing in the community as a community

  • Workplace giving and involvement
  • Targeted investment in the communities in which we operate
