While research shows Australia’s total energy consumption is increasing at a significantly higher rate than population growth, all our breweries have managed to buck this trend by using energy resources such as electricity and gas as efficiently as possible.

Processes such as brewing, packaging, refrigeration and supply of services consume the majority of our energy and electricity requirements with most of the energy needed coming from non-renewable natural resources such as natural gas and coal. There’s no doubt that reduction of energy usage are vital if we are going to conserve natural resources for use by future generations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

Improving energy management is something we’re committed to and for the last decade we have been steadily making improvements.

Our investments in new equipment and technology as well as our continuous improvement projects are not only adding to the bottom line but also conserving natural resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

To keep the momentum going, we have embarked on a further energy reduction blitz through two new external energy efficiency programs and Lion Nathan’s “Project Invest”, a major capital investment program in the business to lift operational efficiency and reduce costs.

Our largest brewery, Tooheys, signed up to the NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability Energy Reduction Program and conducted a detailed energy audit of the brewery which led to the development of an Energy Savings Action Plan which is currently being implemented. On the national front, Lion Nathan is gearing up to participate in the Federal Government’s new Energy Efficiency Opportunities Program, a five year ongoing cyclic programme for large corporations to review and implement energy efficiency opportunities.
