The Beverage Industry Environment Council (BIEC) and its member companies have been a leading force in the development of environmentally responsible waste management practices. Over the past 27 years, BIEC members have funded over $64 million in recycling and litter prevention projects throughout Australia. The Packaging Stewardship Forum has now taken over and is continuing the great work done by BIEC.
Specifically, achievements include:
- Developing and funding the ‘Do the Right Thing’ campaign which changed community attitude to waste and litter on a national scale
- Providing on the ground support for local government employees in the provision of general and best practice information in respect to kerbside recycling
- Conducting recycling and garbage bin audit studies of domestic waste and recycling behaviours. These reports have provided invaluable information to local government on the effectiveness of waste strategies
- Conducting littering/disposal behaviour studies – these studies have gained wide recognition as a new approach to litter management
- Assisting in the introduction of waste minimisation strategies at major public events
- Assisting member companies in waste minimisation and recycling activities
- Carrying out education campaigns to assist with resource recovery of beverage containers through kerbside collection systems and away from home recycling programs
- Contributing to the funding of Keep Australia Beautiful Councils
- Developing draft methodologies for ‘best practice’ principles, including resource recovery systems, domestic waste audits and consistent data collection
